Lectures

All lectures include plenty of time for live Q&A

Trunk Show

I will show a portfolio of my art quilts as I talk about my art quilting journey, the materials, techniques and processes I use and how I found and  developed my unique style.

Working in a Series

In this lecture I will talk about the many benefits of working in a series and give you some tools and techniques that you can use to start working on one of your own.   I’ll also talk about what I call the 7 stages of art making, how to work through and learn from each of them, the 5 keys to success and some strategies for dealing with that pesky inner critique that we all struggle with from time to time.

Easy Fabric Dyeing

create your own solids and tone on tone prints

My method for fabric is very easy and tends to produce a fabric with an unevenly colored surface which I prefer because it makes for a more interesting piece of fabric to work with. In this lecture you’ll learn how to create both solid and tone on tone fabrics working with procion dye and Jacquard color magnet, a dye attractant that magically attracts more dye where it is applied, creating a unique, two-toned effect.  This live zoom lecture also includes pre-recorded video demonstrations.

Whimsical Birds: Full or half day workshop

Learn how to draw whimsical birds using basic circles, square and rectangle shapes and then re-create them in fabric to use on your quilts.  We’ll begin by drawing our birds using an everyday pencil. You’ll start with a basic free hand drawn shape and then give your bird personality with eyes and a beak, feathers, legs and feet.  Then I’ll walk you through the process of re-creating your birds in fabric appliqué to use on your quilts.    Don’t let the idea of drawing your own birds scare you.  I promise that if you can draw a lopsided circle, a wonky square or an uneven rectangle then you can draw a whimsical bird!  But if you’re still unsure, that’s okay because I will provide each student with two of my own whimsical birds that they can use for their project.

In both workshop options students learn my cookie cutter outline method for getting those black outlines around odd shaped images.  My methods for working with Mistyfuse fusible web, my quilt as you go method and my 4 strip fused binding technique.

Modern Art Quilt Design: one shape,  no seams, no limits!

Half, full or multi day workshop

Inside Out

Full or half day workshop

When you use fusing as your primary construction technique no shape or layout is off limits because there are no seams to worry about.  In this workshop we’ll explore the infinite possibilities of working with a singular shape and a limited color palette as the primary design elements for your modern art quilts.  You’ll deconstruct, distort and transform your shape using paper cutting and collage techniques, combine it with a limited color palette and an understanding of the principles of art and design and you’ll have the building blocks you need to create a dynamic modern art quilt that is sure to get a wow! reaction.  By the end of the workshop you’ll have several new modern art quilt designs to work with.

Make your own version of my award winning Inside Out quilt which is a perfect example of how using simple shapes combined with a minimal amount of color doesn’t necessarily result in a boring quilt.  Make your version using solids and/or prints in any color combination that appeals to you!  Create a quilt, wall hanging or table runner . This quilt won 1st place in the appliqué category at Quiltcon 2017 and graces the cover of my latest book “Modern Art Quilts: Design, Fuse & Quilt-As-You-Go”.
